DescriptionSince September 11, 2001 much has changed in our world, nation, state and community. We have become more aware of the devastation that can be casued by unexpected disasters--whether they are caused by nature, by accident or by terrorist attacks. Every family and community needs to take steps to prepare for a possible disaster. Locally, the communities have faced disasters such as _____(local examples here)________ that have raised the level of need in this community.

Program Goal DescriptionThe goal of this plan is to engage students, families, and teachers/volunteers with lessons and activities on disaster preparedness. Furthermore, the intent is to establish a basic level of knowledge of disaster preparedness and subsequently engage youth, families, and teachers/volunteers to initiate steps in becoming better prepared for a disaster.

Objective IndicatorInitially, the expectation is to effect basic knowledge of how to be prepared for a disaster. Participants will learn: 1) what a disaster is; 2) the steps of making a plan; 3) about emotional effects of a disaster and how to cope; 4) what supplies go into organizing a disaster supply kit; 5) where to get local information to stay safe during a disaster; and 6) about sheltering "in place." Utimately, it is expected that participants will engage in some behavior that support increasing the audience's level of preparedness by taking steps to include: 1) having conversations with family members about what to do in the case of an emergency; 2) creating a family plan in case of a disaster; and 3) making a disaster supply kit for the family.
